PATTERNS OF MIGRATION
SOLO EXHIBITION AT VERDANT WORKS, DUNDEE (2018)
Featuring pattern design, printmaking and hand-lettering, Patterns of Migration is a collection of fictional narrative illustrations inspired by migrant women I got to know whilst working at Dundee International Women's Centre.
ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
In 2014 I began working as a receptionist at Dundee International Women’s Centre (DIWC). What started simply as a part-time job became a truly eye-opening experience, and the reason behind this exhibition.
Previously I had very little understanding about barriers facing migrant women. That changed very quickly when I started working at DIWC. I learned so much about people, and about women especially. I heard tales of resilience and sacrifice, of unfairness and inequality, of terrible injustice and incredible fortitude. This exhibition was the result of an almost physical need to get these stories out of my head and into some kind of order. By sharing what I learned I hoped to stimulate conversation and encourage empathy.
