THE BURNING OF STRATHEARN
PRINTED BANNER FOR PERTH MUSEUM
I was one of six artists commissioned to produce a banner for the new Perth Museum, which opens in Spring 2024. Each banner tells a story from local history. Below, I have split the banner into the separate panels so you can read it more easily on your screen.
My story was The Burning of Strathearn, which took place in January 1715. The Jacobites burnt entire towns in the local area, ostensibly to stop the Government army from attacking them at Perth, but with the bonus of taking revenge for a lack of support shown by the people of Strathearn. What struck me most about this horrible event was how familiar it sounded: a few people with power make a series of rash decisions that end up ruining peoples lives, then flee the scene of the crime
